December 2011
I can tell when my dad has been listening to...
because he starts using really random and clunky phraseology (calling George H.W. George W.’s “daddy,” saying things like “reading the tea leaves.”) PLAY WITH LANGUAGE MORE, POLITICAL PUNDITS.

2011 much more briefly
Worked in the clinic. Petted puppies. Applied for grad school. Felt nervous. Watched a shit-ton of movies but didn’t read so many books. Went to London, worked in Kyoto, studied in France, came back to Iowa. Fell in love with all of the above for various reasons. Did a reasonable amount of art. Did a reasonable amount of writing. Felt more nervous. Had famblies. Things were interesting.

2011 in review →
A personal list-style retrospective.  I dunno, this was an interesting year, and pretty even. I think when I look back on it it’s going to look like a pretty good year altogether, once I shake the general sense of feeling like an unproductive bum.

weird things I have done
I remembered my tea but forgot my tea strainer, so I poured the powdered not-so-tasty tea out of a Lipton bag and replaced it with my tastier whole-leaf tea.

my body is being stupid
BODY: Here, have a somewhat sore throat and a slightly runny nose! ME: OH NOES AM I SICK? BODY: Haha, psych! ME: WHAT. Also my sister-in-law has the first confirmed case of true influenza in Iowa this year. Yikes.

fun fact
I have never done anything on New Year’s Eve besides play Trivial Pursuit with my parents and eat cheese and crackers. I think last year I had a glass of wine with my trivia.

h-may replied to your quote: Ay, but to die, and go we know not where; To lie… Why, I don’t think that’s stupid. As long as you’re old and withered, you’re conscious. Consciousness is a real blessing, even a miracle, and we’re within our rights to fear its loss. I feel like the idea of not being afraid to die is ingrained as a virtue in so many cultural narratives about heroism, power,...

“Ay, but to die, and go we know not where; To lie in cold obstruction, and to...”
– Claudio, Act III, Scene i, Measure for Measure, Shakespeare.  Someone once tried to prove the pointlessness of my anxiety to me by extrapolating from the fact that I am afraid to die — because, based on his logic, death is unavoidable and therefore no sensible person would be afraid of it....

My Early Grey container is only half-full, which is upsetting. Therefore I ordered more tea (also several samples!) I have not gotten this brand of tea before, so I shall report on its quality and whether I shall be ordering more of it or returning to Tealuxe (which will always hold a warm and snuggly place in my heart.)

problems you have if you are me, PART TWO
My dog is sort of going deaf and just a touch senile, so sometimes he will wander off into parts of the yard (we have a big yard with an invisible fence) where we can’t see him (like OH MY GOSH HE’S DISAPPEARED oh wait he just went under the pine trees.) We generally let him out and watch him and call for him as soon as he’s done with his jobs and a bit of sniffing around so that...
